Rowing Canada Aviron today announced the team that will compete at the 2002 FISA World Rowing Championships in Seville, Spain, Sept. 15 to 22. After successes at the World Cup regattas in Lucerne and Munich, the 2002 team is poised to make its mark at the rowing elite's top showdown. Canada is sending 11 crews to Spain next month.
"I am very excited about the speed in which our crews are developing," says Brian Richardson, Canadian head coach. "The team has worked incredibly hard over the winter and followed on with some excellent results at the recent World Cups where we won one gold, one silver and two bronzes. This was the perfect preparation for the lead up to the Worlds in Seville."
Rowing Canada has also seen much progress in its development program this year with two gold and one silver at the World Under 23 regatta.
"This means that the teams are gaining confidence in their ability to perform on the international stage. Although everybody knows that those results mean nothing if we don't go on and finish the season off with good results at the Worlds," explains Richardson. The Canadian team hopes to improve on its one-medal performance - a bronze in the women's pair - at last year's Worlds. The crews are the heavyweight men's eight (HM8+) and pair (HM2-); lightweight men's four (LM4-), pair (LM2-) and double (LM2x); lightweight women's double (LW2x) and single (LW1x); heavyweight women's double (HW2x), pair (HW2-), four (HW4-) and eight (HW8+).
The 2002 Rowing World Championships in Seville, the capital of the Andalusian region of Spain, will run on 2000 metres of the Guadalquivir river that flows through the city. The regatta web site is http://www.sevilla-2002.com/
